A Playful Pattern Art Box
Most great artists use shape and pattern in their compositions. In this box, we look at three artists who have particularly enjoyed playing with the idea of repetition and pattern: M. C. Escher with his love of tessellations; Fahrelnissa Zeid and her large-scale abstract paintings; and Camille Walala with her huge bold street-art murals filled with bright colour!

What is the Playful Pattern Box?
A pattern is a regularity appearing in the world, something that repeats itself in a predictable way (as, for example, is found in wallpaper designs and carpets). Pattern is everywhere we go and in everything we do! We wear patterns, we walk over them, we think in them, and we even eat them…
Enjoy creating complex repetitive patterns with tessellations. Have fun making free-hand organic abstract line and shape patterns. Learn all about how pattern can be used in different architectural settings all over the world!
