Magical Movement Art Box

This LoLA box looks at how Matisse used rhythm, line and colour to create a sense of movement in his cut-outs; how Harold E Edgerton, both scientist and artist, used techniques of strobe and flash photography to show tiny movements; how Heather Hansen creates Kinetic art; and at how Degas was inspired by the elegance and grace of dancers.

What's the story behind Magical Movement?

This month is a special box – the theme was so big and inspiring that we had to include information on FOUR artists rather than our usual three! The box includes water-colour paints, oil pastels and charcoal, and explores the theme of Movement in art.

Once our paints are on paper, they cannot physically move. But we can paint in a way which gives the impression of motion. Dance is an art form based entirely on movement; visual art uses movement in a different way, creating an illusion of motion in a static work of art.

“Art is not what you see, but what you make others see” – DEGAS
