How Horrifying is the Halloween Box?!

Halloween involves activities such as carving pumpkins into jack-o-lanterns, lighting bonfires, bobbing for apples, telling scary stories, watching horror films and (last but not least) trick-or-treating! Not surprisingly, black is the dominant colour in the season’s decorations.

Black is an achromatic colour – literally a colour without hue, like white. As the first pigment used by artists in prehistory (and the first ink used by book printers), black played an important role in the development of both art and literature.

In this box we will be looking at all things black – from the art of silhouettes, to costumes inspired by artists over the years and finally to the role of the colour black in modern art. – silhouette monsters on your windows, bat head-dresses, spider rings and monochrome designed pumpkins!
